Travis Kriplean, a computer scientist at the Univ of Washington, and a number of colleagues, want to improve the listening skills of the Web.

In terms of conversation, they say, the Web’s level of sociability is that of a 2-year-old’s, able to express ideas, but not able to listen well, not able to compromise, not able to interact civilly and thoughtfully. Since more mature forms of communication require listening and observing others, the structure of the traditional comment box must change so that the level and the style of discourse will change, too.  One interface type discussed here is called “Reflect.” The other is called “Consider It.” Both are very useful.
