Corner Portraits by Irving Penn
Irving Penn, an American portraiture and fashion photographer, was among the first to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop. Expanding his austere studio surroundings, Penn constructed a set of upright angled backdrops, to form a stark, acute corner, and therein photographed luminaries of the day such as Truman Capote, Salvador Dali, Marlene Dietrich, Marcel Duchamp, Gypsy Rose Lee, Joe Louis, Igor Stravinsky, Georgia O’Keefe, the Duchess of Windsor, Spencer Tracy, and many others.
